A brief history

In 2003 Alan Samuel approached Owen Plastics with an idea to manufacture plastic timber rail sleepers for use underground. The MD of Owen Plastics Harry Rombouts was extremely receptive to the idea and a short time later the first prototypes were being manufactured and trials were started at various mines in the gold and platinum areas.

Tufflex Plastic Products (Pty) Limited was registered in 2004, the concept was for Tufflex to be the marketing arm of Owen plastics (Pty) Limited. The department of minerals and energy gave the all clear for the product to be used in underground conditions. After some time and many tests at the CSIR, Denel and Firetech Labs the right product was born. We now have a product which is a world class product which conforms to SANS 10339 specifications for underground track.

Tufflex Plastic Products prides itself on producing environmentally friendly products that reduces the pressure on landfills by converting used polymers into useful products. These products will maintain their functionality for at least 50 to 60 years.Owen is a recycler of plastics, Polypropylene, HDPE and LDP and has been supplying re-pellitised plastic to manufacturers in South Africa for over 16 years.

In 2008 Owen Plastics acquired all the shares in Tufflex Plastics.Owen Plastics (Pty) Limited and Tufflex Plastics (Pty) limited are members of the Metmar Trading Group of companies and has a long term outlook to business opportunities. The company can produce approximately 300 tons of polymers of varying type and of a high quality per month. We are a level 5 BEE rated company. Owen and Tufflex have merged to become Tufflex Plastic Products (PTY) LTD.
